The past few years have taught me what it must be like to be a socialist: absolute bafflement that your countrymen don’t share your stridently held beliefs. How is it possible that Irish people can see what is not just incompetence but ideological derangement and still vote them back in?

Micheal Martin, that embodiment of sanctimony, thinks that procedure and decorum trump all; that in the case of a tragedy like this, if he gives a solemn statement and affirms that lessons will be learnt, then any reasonable citizen will be placated. If they aren’t, they are by definition unreasonable. The sheer mediocrity of the man, who has been promoted well above his station, sends me into a rage.

Ours is a do-nothing government. It’s possible to imagine a mirror image of that which is even less desirable, but at least for the moment, I want a government that treats doing something - anything - as a worthwhile response. I want a government that tries and fails, and fails better. At the moment, we just have a government that fails.

On a side note, I resent in the extreme that the Garda Ombudsman has rebranded as “Fiosru”, which I can’t pronounce and don’t understand.
