It was very tempting, this week, just to do a podcast on the only story that our friends in the media seem to regard as worth covering, this week: A football match between two truly terrible soccer teams that’s due to take place on Sunday evening, in Hungary. But god knows, you’re either bored of that (wise) or your views won’t ever be shifted on it anyway. We reference it here once or twice, but other than that this is an ISRAEL FREE ZONE. Wait… that’s what the media seems to want. Damnit.
So instead, we said we’d talk about something that’s perhaps more relevant: The enormous number of Irish young people who say that this country is - in the vernacular - shite, and that they’d leave if they could. 68% of them say as much; and even bigger majorities say they cannot get houses. Or jobs.
Frankly, lots of them can’t even get dates. We talk about all of that: The pressures caused by migration; the public money wasted on “free stuff” that doesn’t improve their lives; the closure of pubs; the degradation of shared public spaces like the City Centres.
Then there’s Nick Delehanty: Technically, he’s our rival over on the Irish Question, but he’s also an Irish Person who lost his business this week, and got sneered at by the state-funded media. We talk about that: The pressure and hardship of running a small business, mad proposals from the Labour Party to make it even more difficult, and how all of this ties into the nonsense around Holly Cairns and Maternity leave.
We also discuss Ebun Joseph and the Convention on Education, which John wrote about yesterday. And finally, for fun: Did y’all hear about the mad Lesbians in America? Because it’s a great story, even if it does tend to confirm your suspicions that the western world is presently in a mental health crisis.
